Conte tells Weber that next European appointments should be ‘balanced’

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte is reported to have told Manfred Weber that the next round of European appointments should be “balanced”.

A statement from the premier’s office said that Conte “confirmed that he will work to ensure that the procedures for the European appointments permit a balanced solution on the basis of a combination of various criteria, starting with the geographical one”.

The meeting, the statement said, was “an opportunity to exchange ideas on the future of Europe, in the mutual awareness that Italy’s contribution will be decisive for a Europe that does not only aim for financial stability but also social and sustainable development.”

The premier’s office said “Conte reiterated that Italy has many plans and is very wiling to offer a critical contribution to improve Europe and make it fairer, juster and more solidarity-driven”.
