Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday was sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Greece shortly after winning the Greek general election held on Sunday.

The center-right New Democracy party won general elections in Greece and will form a majority government. A total of six parties will enter parliament based on the results.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was the first head of state to call New Democracy (ND) leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis to congratulate him on this great victory and wished him good luck on Sunday evening  after winning the Greek general election.

According to the website, Greek Reporter, on his part, Mitsotakis -thanked him and stressed that he seeks a relaunch of Greek-Turkish relations on the basis of respect for international law and a sincere dialogue, beneficial to both peoples,” the sources added.

Nicos Anastasiades, President of Cyprus, is the second head of state to call and congratulate Mitsotakis for his victory.

Greece’s new centre-right prime minister has vowed the country will “proudly raise its head again”.

After New Democracy’s landslide victory on Sunday, Mitsotakis said he would not fail to “honour the hopes” of the Greek people.

The win comes four years after Alexis Tsipras’s leftist Syriza party swept to power promising an end to austerity.

But voters began to turn on Syriza after it accepted tough fiscal measures in return for an international bailout.

Sunday’s vote was Greece’s third poll in as many months, and the country’s first mid-summer general election since 1928, which has affected turnout.
