UK’s Change party splits as six MPs quit following leadership contest

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Six Change UK MPs have quit the party, including its outgoing leader.

The remaining supporters in parliament are Anna Soubry – who is the new leader – Chris Leslie, Joan Ryan, Mike Gapes and Ann Coffey.

Sky News reports that former Conservative MP Ms Soubry said she was “deeply disappointed” at the split.

Meanwhile the Telegraph reports that James Cleverly became the first Tory leadership contender to pull out of the race as he said the party is not yet prepared to “skip a generation”.

His announcement came ahead of an expected rule change by the 1922 executive committee, the party’s ruling body, which could tonight require leadership candidates to secure the backing of 10 MPs to run – not the current two.
