22 people die in major Israeli attack on Gaza

Palestinian officials say Israeli airstrikes on Gaza City today killed 22 people, including nine children. The attack struck the Souq Firas area, where video footage showed children’s bodies being pulled from the rubble.

Mahmoud Bassal, spokesman for Gaza’s civil defence, described the incident as a “horrific massacre.” Survivors spoke of the sudden destruction. “We were sleeping in God’s care… it was a surprise,” said resident Sami Hajjaj, adding that six to seven families, including women and children, had been sheltering in the building.

Images from the scene showed men carrying the bodies of children through the devastated neighbourhood.

The Israeli military said the strike was aimed at Hamas militants and claimed its forces took steps to minimise civilian casualties.

Medical officials in the Hamas-run territory reported that 51 people have been killed across Gaza today, underscoring the intensifying toll of the conflict.
