7.5 earthquake registered in Indonesia, felt in Darwin Australia

 

A major earthquake magnitude 7.5 shook Indonesia The epicentre was roughly 222 km below the earth’s surface in Saumlaki. A tsunami warning has been issued near Saumlaki in Indonesia.

The earthquake in a remote area of Indonesia in the Banda Sea has prompted an evacuation in the Australian city of Darwin.

The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre said the earthquake was felt as far as Darwin. The centre said the magnitude 7.2 earthquake occurred at 12:53 PM AEST near Banda Sea.

No tsunami threat to the Australian mainland or territories has been detected, the centre added in its advisory.

Eastern Indonesia and the islands of the Banda Sea host frequent moderate to large earthquakes—the region within 250 km of the June 24th event has hosted close to 50 M 6+ intermediate depth earthquakes over the past 50 years.
