Today’s Editors’ Viewpoints

With the exception of one editor, today’s leading op-eds give their readers a break from viral analysis – focusing on different facets of democracy,  as enshrined through Carnival, Union membership or political accountability.

The Times of Malta dedicates an unlikely editorial to the spontaneous carnival in Nadur, describing it as the largest protected space for art to be created and experienced by the people. Celebrating its freedom to mock and express beliefs and experiences, this particular Carnival is seen as a reflection of society, and hence it is a powerful form of art, which is even more essential for freedom in the post-truth era.

The Independent takes a strong position against mandatory union membership, an idea floated by the General Workers Union and which seems to find an element of support with Prime Minister Robert Abela. Should such proposal be approved, workers might end up being forced to forfeit part of their wage to an entity which does not reflect their values and also add to increasing tensions with employers. The Leader argues that a Union should seek the best for all workers at a particular workplace, irrespective of membership.

L-Orizzont is the latest paper in the past couple of days to describe the current frenzy and panic buying at supermarkets as unwarranted hysteria being flamed by stories on social media. The Editor seeks to put the readers’ mind at rest highlighting the level of preparedness of our authorities  – from health to law enforcement, but does call for more regular updates on the matter.

In-Nazzjon keeps up the momentum on the Vitals-Steward scandal, recalling that Health Minister Chris Fearne had sought to investigate this shady deal. In this context, it links his failed election to lead the Labour Party as a move to restrict him from taking matters further on this matter. The Editorial praises PN leader Adrian Delia for sustaining a campaign on this subject to ensure the emergence of the truth.
