Former Labour Leader Gordon Brown says party’s soul is at risk because of Corbyn’s handling of anti-Semitism crisis

Gordon Brown has warned that the “soul” of the Labour Party is at risk because of Jeremy Corbyn’s handling of the anti-Semitism crisis. The former Labour Prime Minister said that Labour must take action “immediately” to right the “hurt” that it has caused the Jewish community.

He said that the Labour Party must “unanimously and unequivocally” accept the international definition of anti-Semitism. It came as Lord Sacks, a former Chief Rabbi, warned that Jewish people are prepared to leave Britain if Jeremy Corbyn becomes Prime Minister because of the “existential” threat he poses.

Lord Sacks said that the majority of the Jewish people are asking “is this country safe to bring up our children” as her accused Mr Corbyn of making anti-Semitic comments.

Mr Corbyn will this week face a new row with Labour MPs as the party’s ruling body votes on whether to accept an internationally-recognised definition of anti-Semitism.

Labour MPs are concerned that it will be significantly watered down and ban retrospective investigations into historic allegations of anti-Semitism.

Mr Brown told a conference organised by the Jewish Labour Movement: “This is not a theoretical and abstract problem we are dealing with. It is about the soul of the Labour party.

“We cannot stand up for the rights of some of the people, some of the time. We have to stand up for all of the people all of the time.”

“This stain had got to be removed. The hurt is has done has got to be undone immediately and within the next few days.”
