The Italian Minister of Transport Paola De Micheli is preparing to adopt, at the request of the President of the Sicilian Region Nello Musumeci, a series of measures to contain the spread of coronavirus in Sicily.
These include the suspension of national and international air connections, except for two flights a day between Rome and Palermo / Catania: blocking of all interregional car services and maritime passenger services, guaranteeing only freight.
This was announced by a statement from the Presidency of the Region. It will be possible for passengers to travel from Villa San Giovanni and Reggio Calabria to Messina and vice versa, but only for proven work or health needs. With Rome, only one intercity train will be maintained per day. The governor also asked the Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza, the necessary health checks on departure for both passengers and drivers of goods transport vehicles.
The President of the Sicilian Region Nello Musumeci had urged “the intervention of the Army” to “contain the arrivals from Northern Italy” on the island.
Musumeci expressed concern about the return of over 31, 000 persons in a few days from Northern Italy, urging the Government for “greater controls”. “We are worried by the over thirty thousand people who arrived in Sicily and registered in the last ten days. But how many thousands more have entered the island without feeling the same responsibility and the same prudence?” stressed Musumeci.
