Greek government press for charges against priests who provided communion despite ban

The Greek government has asked for a prosecutor to press charges against two priests after they provided holy communion on Sunday despite a ban in place to try to curb the coronavirus, government officials said late Sunday.

“What happened today in [these] churches is a violation of the law and of the Holy Synod’s orders and put citizens’ lives and public health in great danger,” said Deputy Minister of Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias.

The Greek Ministry of Justice has been in contact with prosecutors to intervene, Greek officials said.

Meanwhile there were were 5 more fatalities from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours in Greece, all men, raising the total to 98, authorities say.

There are now a total of 2,114 confirmed cases of the disease, 33 of them added since Saturday afternoon.

There are 76 people hooked to ventilators, while 15 patients that had been in intensive care have recovered, authorities said in a statement.
