Greek authorities to ease restrictions as from next week

Authorities in Greece has given early indications of preparations for the reversal of the country’s lockdown. Stelios Petsas, a spokesperson for the Government, announced that as of next Monday, the justice system will start to return to normality with with land registry offices and some courts opening “for specific procedures”.

This will constitute the first relaxation of measures since schools were first closed in the Peloponnese region on 4th March. While Petsas insisted that the Greek Government’s priority remained the protection of the most vulnerable, small shops will be allowed to open as from the beginning of May.

Other outlets such as cafeterias and restaurants will have to wait longer, and when they do re-open, they will have to satisfy safer social distancing rules.

So far 2,245 cases have bee confirmed in the country. “We are not there yet,” the spokesperson continued, expressing his concern at a recent spike in infections in a refugee camp in Kranidi. More than 150 Somali refugees are understood to have contracted the virus from this location.
