Germany reports 202 more deaths

Germany on Wednesday reported 1,304 more cases of the novel coronavirus while the number of deaths rose by 202 compared to the previous day, data from the Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases showed.

Europe’s most populous country now has a total of 157,641 confirmed cases and 6,115 deaths, according to the tally.

Germany faces the prospect of having to restore stricter lockdown measures as its number and rate of coronavirus infections grew again.

Hailed as among Europe’s most successful in tackling the pandemic, the country began relaxing restrictions on 20 April to allow small businesses to open as the reproduction rate of the virus fell.

Developments in Germany are of particular significance given that other governments  are monitoring the situation closely in the hope it could help guide their approach to easing lockdown measures.
