28 years ago Beverly Hills 90210 hit the TV screens for the first time

28 years passed since one of the definitive shows of the 1990s, “90210” hit the TV screens.

The series, which also featured as a regular in Malta thanks to its screening on Mediaset channels, originally follows the lives of Brandon and Brenda Walsh, who both eventually leave the show, and their friends through high school and college into adulthood. In addition to making sideburns momentarily cool again during its run, the show deals with a steady stream of love triangles and other romantic entanglements, and occasionally touches on more serious issues as well.

Running from 1990 to 2000, it was the first of five shows in the Beverly Hills franchise, and followed the lives of a group of friends living in the trendy and celebrity-filled community of – wait for it – Beverly Hills in California, as they moved from high school to college and into the adult world. (If you’re wondering, the ‘90210’ refers to one of the city’s five ZIP codes.

What is the cast up to

Jason Priestly became a teen idol thanks to playing the show’s co-lead character Brandon in the show, and he stayed for the majority of its run.

He has kept busy ever since, though he’s probably still best known for his breakthrough role. He was the star of Canadian series Call Me Fitz, and appeared in various movies and TV shows including Going the Distance, Tru Calling and How I Met Your Mother. Since 2016, he has been the lead in Canadian sitcom Raising Expectations alongside Molly Ringwald, as well as the Canadian comedy-drama Private Eyes.

He has also been involved in racing cars, and often appears at various competitions. He married make-up artist Naomi Lowde in 2005, and they have two children.

Shannen Doherty starred as Brandon’s twin sister Brenda, but left the show after four seasons, after Brenda was written off as moving to London to attend school at the Royal Academy for Dramatic Arts. Fair enough.

After a few years in the semi-wilderness, she returned to TV in a big way by joining the cast of supernatural series Charmed in 1998, but left after three seasons after apparently clashing with certain cast and crew. Since then, she’s been some of a reality TV favourite.

She tried Dancing with the Stars in 2010 (though she was the first to exit), and she reunited with Charmed’s Holly Marie Combs for travel show Off the Map. And we can’t forget (or forgive) Breaking Up with Shannen Doherty – the mean-spirited show where she helped people dump their partners.

Acting-wise, her biggest moment was returning to the 90210 TV universe in 2008 for a few episodes.

She revealed in March 2015 that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, and later completed chemo. After a successful mastectomy, she confirmed in April 2017 that her cancer was in remission.

Jennie Garth (Taylor) Since starring in all 10 seasons of BH, Jennie went on to have starring roles in the series What I Like About You and Mystery Girls alongside former co-star Tori Spelling. She also returned as Kelly in the spin-off series 90210 in 2008. Earlier this year, she was a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race.

She competed in the fifth season of Dancing with the Stars, making the semi-finals. In 2013, she divorced Peter Facinelli, her husband of 12 years and father of her three daughters. In 2015, she married actor David Abrams, after meeting him on a blind date the year before.

Since playing Steve for all ten seasons of the drama, Ian Ziering has become a reality TV hero. He also reached the semi-finals of Dancing with the Stars, but the year before Jennie Garth. He also took part in Celebrity Apprentice in 2015, and almost became the host of The Price is Right in 2007, but lost out to Drew Carey.

You’ll perhaps best know him today for playing Fin in the Sharknado universe. He also amazingly voiced Vinnie in 1990s cartoon Biker Mice from Mars and its remake.

In 2010, he married his second wife, Erin Kristine Ludwig, and they have two children together.

The year after she stopped playing every 1990s kid’s crush Kelly in Saved by the Bell in 1993, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen joined the cast of BH. She followed this show up with various other series including What About Brian, Two Guys, A Girl and a Pizza Place, Just Shoot Me!, Fastlane, and Good Morning, Miami and White Collar.

In 2015, she began hosting her own cooking show, Dinner at Tiffani’s, on Cooking Channel in the States. Next year, she will star in a new Netflix sitcom titled Alex & Katie.

Tiffani married actor Brady Smith in 2005, and they have two children together.

Luke Perry became a teen idol thanks to playing brooding Dylan on the show, and soon landed himself film roles including the first version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Fifth Element.

After returning to the show for its final two seasons, he has continued to stay busy, appearing in everything from The Simpsons (“Ouch! My face, my valuable face!”) What I Like About You, Community, Family Guy, Oz, John from Cincinnati, Jeremiah, Sin City, Will & Grace, Law & Order: SVU, Criminal Minds, and Raising Hope.

Since 2017, he has starred in popular teen drama Riverdale as Fred Andrews.

He’s also appeared on Broadway and on stage in London, including a 2004 production of When Harry Met Sally opposite Alyson Hannigan. Wait, what? That sounds amazing! How did we miss that?

In 2003, he divorced his wife of 10 years, Minnie Sharp, with whom he has two children.
