Brazilians began voting on Sunday in the most polarized election in decades as anger over corruption and crime were expected to carry Jair Bolsonaro to the presidency, marking a dramatic swing to the right in the world’s fourth-largest democracy.
Jair Bolsonaro , the PSL candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, voted this Sunday at 9:17 am (local time) at the Rosa da Fonseca Municipal School in Vila Militar, located in the western zone of Rio.
Accompanied by his wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, he entered the school from the back, without beckoning to voters waiting for him at the entrance to the polling station.
According to the Folha de S. Paulo , the security of the place was reinforced with barriers and the presence of the Army, the Military Police and the Federal Police, all heavily armed.
Earlier, the Federal Police scanned the section in which the candidate voted for bombs or other explosives. Special equipment and sniffer dogs were used.
After voting, Bolsonaro was interviewed by journalists about the expectation for this second round. He remains ahead of Fernando Haddad (PT) in polls. “It’s what I’ve seen on the streets over the past few months: it’s victory,” he replied.
