A quick round up of the most salient news from Malta’s portals.

An Armed Forces of Malta patrol boat has rescued 69 migrants and is bringing them to Malta later on Sunday, the AFM said in a statement. The migrants were picked up by AFM Patrol Vessel P51 from a wooden boat in distress, some 117 NM South-West of Malta. The AFM did not give any details about the nationalities or ages of the migrants. The Malta Independent One News 


Opposition leader Adrian Delia warned on Sunday that he would take action against those who were taking advantage of his personal struggles to score political points. Speaking on the Nationalist Party radio NET FM, Dr Delia reiterated that he would not be commenting on his ongoing marital separation, as both him and his wife Nickie Vella De Fremaux pledged to do in court. Times of Malta , Net News


The government has denied discussing the introduction of abortion as claimed in some sections of the media on Sunday. “The government denies any discussions on the introduction of abortion. It is not being discussed and it is not part of the government’s agenda,” a government spokesperson said in response to questions by MaltaToday.

The Nationalist Party’s media claimed that the Government and Occupy Justice activists secretly want to legalise abortion. Occupy Justice also categorically refuted the allegations made by Il-Mument arguing that it is highly irresponsible of a newspaper editor to resort to fabricating fake news in order to try to distract from an alleged criminal act. Lovin Malta


The Archbishop Charles Scicluna, Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Galea-Curm and Gozo’s Bishop Mario Grech, along with President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and Opposition Leader Adrian Delia invited the general public to participate in the annual fundraising marathon for Dar tal-Providenza, Festa Ġenerożità, on Tuesday 1 January. Newsbook 


Simon Schembri has had an opportunity to once again carry Julian Cassar in his arms. Julian is the young boy who was born in 2013 as a result of Constable Schembri’s intervention. A call for assistance had been received at Police Headquarters on 26 June 2013 from a man who was caught in traffic at Luqa. The man was accompanied by his wife, who was perilously close to giving birth. Three Police officers who were in the vicinity had managed to get them to Mater Dei hospital on time. Simon Schembri was the officer who had taken over and driven the man’s car to the hospital. TVM
