Lineker tells Germans that they and the British can still be friends after Brexit

Ex-England striker Gary Lineker may have suffered his most famous football defeat against Germany – but now he has written an open letter to the country, saying: “We still want to be friends”.

The sports star-turned-TV presenter has joined a group of prominent politicians in penning a letter in Germany’s Die Welt newspaper.

With the UK set to leave the EU next month, the group wrote: “We still want to be friends. We love your beer, your football, some of us even like your cooking.

“Given the challenges we face we need to stand together to champion the values of tolerance and openness that you say are our hallmark.”
