Spain’s tax regime applied in football is not state aid – EU General Court

The EU General Court today ruled that the European Commission was wrong to classify the tax regime that benefited four Spanish football clubs as state aid.

In a judgment today today, the Luxembourg court annulled a 2016 Commission decision arguing that Spain gave the clubs — the Fútbol Club Barcelona (Barcelona), the Club Atlético Osasuna (Pamplona), the Athletic Club (Bilbao) and the Real Madrid Club de Fútbol (Madrid) — an unfair advantage by allowing them to pay a lower corporate tax rate.
