Algeria’s Bouteflika offers to leave… within one year

Amid the continuing turmoil in Algeria, Reuters reports that President Abdelaziz Bouteflika offered to step down after a year if re-elected.

Algeria is facing the biggest protests since the Arab Spring over Bouteflika’s 20 years in power and his decision to run once more in April’s elections.

The comments are being interpreted as an attempt to appease those who had taken to the streets to protest against the 82-year-old’s plans to remain in office and to allow him an exit on his own terms.

But shortly after the message was read late Sunday evening new anti-government protests broke out late at night in the capital and other cities drawing in thousands.
