Romano Prodi on Brexit: “It’s a mess”

After another chaotic performance in the British Parliament, Euronews interviewed seasoned European dealmaker Romano Prodi, the former EU Commission President and Italian Prime Minister for his views on the current Brexit gridlock.

When asked if the 27 European leaders should grant to the UK an extension of the leaving process Prodi replied that in his opinion…”I think this is really a mess”.
He added that after closely following the situation, every day he had to change his mind because one doesn’t know where the British could converge.

About the other challenges facing the EU, apart from Brexit including the rise of populist and euro sceptic parties, Prodi said that Europe has to go back to some sort of common will in Europe, with different conditions and different rules.

He added that the European Union is a union of minorities and if we don’t go back to that and if the minorities inside the Commission are not represented, then Europe is lost.

Prodi is also optimist that after Brexit, the populist and anti-Europeans will melt away.
