Expectations high of imminent regime change in Sudan

There is a sense of mounting anticipation in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum of big changes with some reports indicating a coup is taking place.

The Sudanese army is expected to make “an important announcement”, state media said on Thursday without giving further details., after months of protests against longtime President Omar al-Bashir.

The protests, which erupted in December, have become the biggest challenge yet to Bashir’s three decades of rule.

Thursday marked the sixth day of a defiant sit-in outside the military’s headquarters, which also houses Bashir’s official residence and the defence ministry.

The announcement by the army raised anticipation that President Bashir’s 30 years in power are coming to an end.

Tens of thousands of people have been maintaining a protest vigil outside military headquarters since Saturday, demanding the removal of the president.

On two successive nights they were attacked by intelligence and militia forces loyal to him – and on both occasions the army stepped in to protect them.

This was an early sign of fracturing in a previously steadfast security establishment.
