Senior North Korean official on a visit in New York

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and high-ranking North Korean official Kim Yong Chol enter a second day of meetings in New York on Thursday as they try to settle nuclear weapons disagreements and set the stage for an historic summit between their two leaders.

In a tweet, Pompeo announced their dinner meeting and while at it, provided a description of what they were eating during the meeting.  “Good working dinner with Kim Yong Chol in New York tonight. Steak, corn, and cheese on the menu.”

Earlier, AP reported that a senior North Korean official arrived in New York on Wednesday in the highest-level official visit to the United States in 18 years, as President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un sought to salvage prospects for a high-stakes nuclear summit.

The Financial Times said that state department official added that part of the negotiations between Pyongyang and Washington revolved around the security guarantees that North Korea wants to get as part of any agreement. “What we have to convince them is that . . . their nuclear programme has made them less secure, that there’s a better path forward,” said the official. “We’re willing to work with them to provide them the security guarantees they feel they need, and in fact, we’re willing to go beyond that to help them have greater economic prosperity. But they have to denuclearise.”
