Newspaper Review – Saturday 2nd June ’18

The traffic accident in which a cyclist was killed near the new Kappara Junction features prominently on all local newspapers. In-Nazzjon and The Malta Independent report the incident. L-Orizzont carries comments by Dr George Debono, a regular bicycle user and who said that there’s intollerance from car drivers. The Times refers to the Bicylce Advocacy Group, which stressed that ‘Lack of road safety is putting cyclists in danger”.

In another story, the Malta Independent gives prominence to the visit by MEPs Sven Giegold and Ana Gomes, who yesterday spent their day in Malta meeting with relevant stake holders. In their views “concerns about Malta’s rule of law are now event stronger”.

The Times other main story refers to the comments by the MFSA about Pilatus Bank. In the report entitled Pilatus Bank operations compromised, MFSA insists we read that “Seyed Ali Sadr Hasheminejad’s arrest in the US “immediately compromised” Pilatus Bank’s entire operation and made it “fall foul of a myriad of provisions”, the financial services watchdog said. The Malta Financial Services Authority has hit back at an attempt by the bank’s directors to regain control, insisting the gravity of the situation warranted all the measures taken.”

L-Orizzont carries comments by Fr Dijonisju Mintoff, the brother of former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff, following the unveiling of monument for the latter. Fr Mintoff said that this monument is a good remembrance for someone who gave his life to the country. In a photo story, the newspaper quotes former Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi who criticised the NAO after the publication of the report about Mater Dei Hospital.

The Malta Independent leads the front page with a photo showing Giuseppe Conte shaking hands with Sergio Mattarella, as the New Italian government was sworn in yesterday. This is covered in detail on the back-page of L-Orizzont.

In-Nazzjon continues with its investigations about the distribution of food to children in schools. After it reported the issue of sour fruit and boiled vegetables in unsealed packets, we read that the children attending in H’Attard’s primary are given sour milk.

The newspaper also carries a photo showing two children presenting a football to the Archbishop during a mass in Siggiewi, as part of his pastoral visit to locality.
