Two Reuters journalists detained in Myanmar freed

Two Reuters journalists jailed in Myanmar after reporting on the military’s abuses against the ethnic Rohingya minority were freed Tuesday, coinciding with a broader presidential amnesty for more than 6,000 prisoners.

The two were arrested in late 2017 and convicted of violating the Southeast Asian country’s law on state secrets while working on a major investigative report that detailed the slaughter of a group of Rohingya men.

Last month, the two journalists, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, were part of a team of Reuters journalists that won a Pulitzer Prize for their coverage of Myanmar military’s brutal campaign, which pushed some 700,000 people into neighboring Bangladesh.
