Council of Europe accuses Hungary’s government of widespread human rights violations

The Council of Europe accused Hungary’s government of widespread human rights violations, including depriving refugees of food, in a report published Tuesday.

Dunja Mijatović, the watchdog’s human rights commissioner, said rights abuses in Hungary must be addressed “as a matter of urgency” when she outlined the findings of her report.

In particular, Mijatović painted a damning picture of Hungary’s asylum system and treatment of refugees, reporting that the rhetoric and policies of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s government had resulted in “a legislative framework which undermines the reception of asylum seekers and the integration of recognised refugees.”
