Malta : Government orders stop of all excavation and demolition works

The government of Malta has ordered the stop of all excavation and demolition works in Malta.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat made the announcement on Thursday afternoon at the start of an emergency meeting with stakeholders in the construction industry.

The meeting was called after a block of apartments collapsed last Saturday in Mellieha, the second incident in as many months. However, the meeting was overshadowed by yet another collapse this morning in Gwardamanga.

MaltaToday reports the third building collapse in two months has forced the government to take the drastic measure to temporarily stop all excavation and demolition works across the island.

The Malta Independent also reports that the drastic measure was taken today in the wake of another collapse of a building in Pieta

The Times reports that the prime minister spoke briefly to the media before going in for a meeting with representatives of the building industry.
