Corporate Dispatch Europe Explained – agendaEurope – The Week Ahead – 17th till 21st June

A quick glance at the main forthcoming events in the European Union including EU Council, Commission and Parliament meetings and other EU-related conferences and events. Events for the week of 17th June to 21 June:

Monday 17th June the Foreign Affairs Council meets in Luxembourg. The Foreign Affairs Council will start with a discussion on current affairs, allowing ministers to review pressing issues on the international agenda. This may include the situation in Venezuela and in the Persian Gulf. Over lunch, EU foreign ministers will have an exchange of views on development in the Middle East with the Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ayman Safadi.

The EU-Jordan Association Council will take place in the afternoon.


Tuesday 18th June, President Jean-Claude Juncker delivers the opening speech at the European Development Days. He will later receive in separate meetings Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda;  Jorge Carlos Fonseca, President of Cabo Verde and Macky Sall, President of Senegal.


Wednesday 19th June, President Jean-Claude Juncker delivers a keynote speech at the Forum on Central Banking organised by the European Central Bank (ECB), in Sintra, Portugal.


Thursday 20th June, President Jean-Claude Juncker participates in the EPP Summit ahead of the European Council. Commissioner Karmenu Vella will be in Oslo, Norway: to deleiver a speech at the European Green Capital 2021 and European Green Leaf 2020 Award Ceremony.

Also, the European Council opens. EU leaders will meet in Brussels to take the relevant decisions on appointments for the next institutional cycle and to adopt the EU’s strategic agenda for 2019-2024. The strategic agenda will be used to plan the work of the European Council and will provide the basis for the work programmes of the other EU institutions.

Also, on the agenda, the European Council will discuss climate change ahead of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Climate Action Summit on 23 September 2019.

In the context of the European semester, the European Council will also discuss the country-specific recommendations. In addition, the leaders will take note of a report on disinformation and elections prepared by the Romanian presidency in cooperation with the Commission and the High Representative.

The President of Romania will also provide an overview of progress on the implementation of earlier European Council conclusions.

The European Council President Donald Tusk will meet with President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and later European People’s Party summit


Friday 21st June, President Jean-Claude Juncker participates in the Euro Summit. EU27 leaders will meet for a Euro Summit in an extended format. The heads of state or government are expected to discuss the deepening of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). They will discuss in particular: the design, modalities of implementation and timing of a budgetary instrument for convergence and competitiveness for the euro-area; changes to the treaty establishing the European Stability Mechanism and progress on the strengthening of the banking union.

President Donald Tusk will meet with President of the European Central Bank Mario Draghi and later with Prime Minister of Finland Antti Rinne.
