Genoa Bridge had safety problems before collapse – Report

The Genoa bridge that collapsed last year with the death of 43 people had a series of safety problems in the 10 years before the disaster, according to a report commissioned by Italian infrastructure company Atlantia.

The report, seen by the Financial Times, was presented last November to Atlantia’s board. One of the company’s subsidiaries, Autostrade per l’Italia, was in charge of the upkeep of the Morandi bridge.

The collapse of the structure last August sent cars falling from a height of 45 metres. Some people close to the board said the presentation of the report was rushed, without enough time to absorb the findings of the 87-page document. They also questioned why the report had not been made public.

They said the company’s response to the disaster was disorganised and that it took more than week to organise a board meeting.
