700 protesters detained in Russia in a military style operation

Russian police detained almost 700 protesters at a rally in Moscow on Saturday in a military-style operation designed as a show of force amid a sweeping crackdown against opposition leaders, POLITICO reports.

It adds that “the unsanctioned rally was the latest in a series of protests in Moscow to demand that pro-democracy opposition figures be allowed on the ballot for city assembly elections in September.”

Police officers detained a number of people as they stood silently near the square’s iconic statue of Alexander Pushkin, the country’s 19th-century national poet. None of the detainees were carrying signs or placards. Footage posted online showed officers striking protesters lying on the ground with batons.
