79.3% of the members of the Movimento Cinque Stelle voted in favour, 20.7% against, the coalition government agreement with the Democratic Party.
The members voted through the so called Rousseau platform.
The 5Stars announced that 79 percent of the nearly 80,000 people who took part in the vote backed the deal.
POLITICO reports “The 5Stars and Democratic Party make an unlikely couple, as the 5Star Movement was founded a decade ago by comedian Beppe Grillo in rejection of established parties like the PD. Their partnership would mark another first for Europe — a ruling alliance between an established party and self-declared populists.
The new government will be less confrontational towards Brussels than the 5Stars/League, especially on migration where Salvini’s hardline stance put him at odds with Italy’s EU partners. The 5Stars and PD will attempt to strike a balance between growth-boosting economic measures and a more cautious approach to the budget than the outgoing formation, according to their joint policy program.
Conte, an independent who is close to the 5Stars, will stay on as prime minister. 5Stars leader Luigi Di Maio, like Salvini, was a deputy prime minister in the 5Star-League coalition, but it’s as yet unclear what role he will play in the new government.
