Soccer hooligan arrests and injuries in Italy doubled last year

Soccer hooligan arrests and injuries in Italy doubled last year, according to the latest annual report out this week.

The number of people arrested for soccer violence rose from 59 in 2021-2022 to 125 in the 2022-23 season, said the new report from the National Observatory on Sporting Events.

A total of 2,662 matches (381 in Serie A) were taken into.

Some 233,999 police were deployed (up from 175,296 in the 2021-22 season).

Injuries among civilians were 113 (66 in the previous season); those among the police force 147 (72 in 2021-22).

There were some 2,011 ultras cited (compared to 1,480) and 125 arrested (compared to 59).

Also monitored, for the first time in this edition of the report, were acts of racial, territorial and anti-Semitic discrimination.

There were 126 of these.
