Turkey convicts former pro-Kurdish party officials over protests

A Turkish court handed down convictions to former prominent officials of the pro-Kurdish HDP party, including co-leader Figen Yuksekdag, for their alleged role in inciting protests in 2014 following an Islamic State attack on the Syrian Kurdish town of Kobani.

This verdict is expected to exacerbate political tensions surrounding the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Turkey. The party is already facing potential closure in a separate legal case and has been replaced in parliament by another pro-Kurdish party.

Figen Yuksekdag received a cumulative prison sentence exceeding 30 years. However, the court has yet to announce a ruling regarding HDP co-leader Selahattin Demirtas.

The 2014 protests, in which 37 people lost their lives, were triggered by allegations that Turkey’s military did not intervene as Islamic State militants besieged Kobani, located near the Turkish border.

Among the 108 defendants charged with various offences, including homicide and undermining Turkey’s national unity, were senior HDP figures. The party has consistently denied these accusations.
