Ukraine will stop Putin, Biden tells NATO in forceful speech

Joe Biden vigorously defended the foreign policy accomplishments of his presidency as he welcomed NATO member states to a summit in Washington on Tuesday, a meeting closely monitored by allies both domestically and internationally for evidence that the embattled U.S. president can still lead.

Biden, 81, has faced intense scrutiny over the past 12 days regarding his fitness for office, with some fellow Democrats on Capitol Hill and campaign donors fearing he might lose the November 5 election following a faltering debate performance on June 27.

“(Vladimir) Putin wants nothing less, nothing less, than Ukraine’s total subjugation … and to wipe Ukraine off the map,” Biden said, referencing the Russian president. “Ukraine can and will stop Putin.”

The White House hopes his speech, delivered with strength and confidence and free of the verbal missteps and confusion seen in his debate performance, will put an end to the speculation.

Biden has dismissed calls to step aside in his race against Republican Donald Trump, 78, pledging to defeat him in November. So far, he retains the support of most of his party’s elite.
