India loosens restrictions on nationals wishing to travel to Libya

Indian authorities announced easing travel restrictions to Libya, after a travel ban was imposed on its citizens 8 years ago, explaining its new decision was taken after the “improved security situation in the country.”

The Indian Foreign Ministry said that it had issued this announcement after a comprehensive assessment of the current security situation in Libya, indicating a decrease in the overall level of risk.

The Ministry added that the statement issued on May 23, 2016, which imposed a ban on Indian citizens traveling to Libya, was amended based on an assessment of the security situation. The ban was amended to an advice to avoid traveling to Libya except in necessary cases. It advised citizens to contact the Indian Embassy in Tripoli in emergency situations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of National Unity announced last July the reopening of the Indian Embassy in the capital, Tripoli.

Earlier this week, India issued an advisory asking its nationals to “avoid non-essential travel” to Libya, in a partial modification of its 2016 advisory imposing ban on the Indian nationals travelling to the African country.

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the Indian nationals in Libya are advised to “exercise caution” and “avoid inter-province travel by road” and remain in contact with the Indian Embassy in Tripoli.
