Pro-EU parties secure win in Romania general election

Romania’s incoming parliament and government are set to maintain the country’s strong pro-EU, pro-NATO, and pro-Ukraine stance, despite gains by ultra-nationalist challengers.

With over 98% of votes counted from Sunday’s parliamentary elections, the ruling leftist Social Democratic Party (PSD) leads with nearly 23%, holding a 5% advantage over the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR), which secured just over 18%.

The centre-right National Liberal Party (PNL) follows with approximately 14.5%, while the reformist Save Romania Union (USR) garnered 11.9%. Three additional parties crossed the 5% threshold needed to enter parliament.
