Gift shops and fast food banned in Bergamo Alta in Italy

Fast-food outlets and sex shops are among the commercial activities banned from Bergamo Alta in an ordinance from the local government in the Lombardy town concerning its historic and picturesque upper half.

Bazaars, gift shops, knick-knack shops, sex shops, adult items, fast food, fry shops and takeaways and self-service laundries are some of the shops that will not be able to open in Bergamo Alta, according to the ‘Regulation for the enhancement of trade in the Upper City, the protection of the historic center, the villages and the decorum of commercial establishments’ approved today by the city council.

The regulations will now also have to be examined by the city council.

The regulation also identifies some areas of Bergamo where the establishment of new automated or non-automated luggage storage facilities will be prohibited, including those managed by porterage companies, “both on public land and in private premises facing the public road”.

It will also be “mandatory to darken the windows of vacant commercial premises”.
