A gunman armed with an assault-style rifle killed four people and wounded another inside a Manhattan skyscraper that houses the NFL’s headquarters and several major financial firms, before taking his own life, New York officials said Monday.
One of the victims was NYPD officer Didarul Islam, 36, a Bangladeshi immigrant and father of two, with a third child on the way. He was working security as part of an NYPD commercial property programme.
The suspect, 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, had a history of mental illness and is believed to have acted alone.
Mayor Eric Adams hailed Islam as a “true blue hero,” while NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the motive remains unclear. A fifth victim remains in critical condition.
