Pope Leo’s recent criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump’s immigration policies has energised Catholic organisations working to assist migrants affected by the administration’s strict enforcement measures, according to senior Church leaders. Following the Pope’s call for “deep reflection” on the country’s treatment of immigrants, several leading bishops, Catholic Charities USA, and the national network of Catholic nuns said they intend to intensify their efforts to support affected communities.
Kerry Alys Robinson, president and CEO of Catholic Charities USA, said the Pope’s remarks “strengthen the resolve of those of us in the United States who remain deeply committed to welcoming the stranger.” Leo, the first U.S.-born pontiff, has increasingly voiced concern over the human impact of immigration policies, particularly after being asked about the situation of detainees at a federal facility near Chicago. “I know how much it means to detainees and their families that Pope Leo is paying close attention to their suffering,” said Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich, welcoming the Pope’s growing focus on the issue.
