Cyprus Introduces €85 Penalty for Blocking Public EV Charging Points

Parliament in Cyprus has endorsed new measures aimed at curbing the misuse of electric-vehicle charging bays, approving a bill that introduces an €85 fine for parking violations at publicly accessible charging points.

The amendment, tabled by Green Party MP Stavros Papadouris, was designed to tackle persistent complaints from citizens about vehicles—both electric and conventional—blocking access to charging facilities. Lawmakers on the House transport committee strengthened the provision to ensure the fine applies not only to non-EVs but also to electric vehicles parked in a charging bay without actually charging.

Under the revised rules, an electric vehicle will be deemed “in a charging position” only if its cable is physically connected to the charging station. The regulation further extends to municipal parking areas, aiming for uniform enforcement across public spaces.

Papadouris characterised the measure as modest but necessary to safeguard infrastructure that remains essential for the gradual expansion of the country’s EV ecosystem. The €85 penalty mirrors the existing fine for violating bus-lane restrictions, ensuring consistency within the broader traffic-enforcement framework.
