Malta Courts Chinese Investment at Luxury Property Expo
Malta has sent its largest-ever business delegation overseas to promote the country as an investment destination, with more than 80 property-sector representatives attending the LPS Shanghai Luxury Property Exhibition. The visit was organised by the Property Malta Foundation, a public-private partnership tasked with attracting foreign property investment. Addressing the conference, Minister Jonathan Attard said Malta was “open for business”, inviting investors who share the country’s vision for sustainable growth and innovation. The Shanghai event, co-organised with luxury yacht maker Ferretti Yachts, targets high-net-worth buyers across the Asia-Pacific region. During the visit, Attard also met Shanghai’s vice mayor. The construction reform ministry said the trip positioned Malta as a strategic gateway for international investors while reaffirming commitments to transparency, sustainability and high standards. Cab Numbers Rise Despite Oversaturation Warning
Malta added 178 new garage-hire vehicles during the first nine months of 2025, despite earlier warnings that the cab market had become oversaturated. Figures from the National Statistics Office show the number of licensed cabs increased from 5,028 in the first quarter of the year to 5,206 by September. This follows only a marginal decline in 2024. The increase sits uneasily alongside Prime Minister Robert Abela’s statement last year that the market was saturated, coupled with a pledge that no further permits would be issued to third-country nationals to work in the sector. The figures suggest that, notwithstanding policy declarations, the number of taxis on Malta’s roads continues to rise, raising fresh questions about enforcement, traffic congestion and market regulation. European Parliament to Debate Malta Sewage Petition
A petition calling for an end to the discharge of sewage into Malta’s seas has been formally accepted for debate by the European Parliament. Submitted by environmental NGO Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar on behalf of Maltese residents, the petition will be discussed by the Parliament’s Committee on Petitions in March 2025. Environmentalist Astrid Vella welcomed the news, saying the organisation would continue its efforts to secure clean and accessible seas around Malta and Gozo. (Newsbook)
