Europe’s struggling carmakers are looking to Brussels for relief when the European Commission unveils an automotive package on Tuesday, potentially softening the effective 2035 ban on new combustion engine cars.

Automakers that once embraced an ambitious shift to electric vehicles have been hit by weaker-than-expected demand, high energy costs and growing competition from Chinese rivals.

EU officials are expected to propose measures to support the sector, with senior lawmakers suggesting the Commission may drop plans for a full ban on combustion engines.

The industry is pushing for more flexibility, including continued use of CO₂-neutral fuels, hybrids and incentives to boost EV demand, arguing rigid targets no longer reflect market realities as electric sales growth remains slower than anticipated.
