PM says fiscal deficit to fall below EU threshold ahead of schedule

Prime Minister Robert Abela has said Malta’s fiscal deficit is expected to fall below the EU’s 3% limit well ahead of the agreed deadline, citing strong economic performance despite opposition claims of overspending. Speaking at a political rally, Abela pointed to falling public debt, record-low unemployment, and a budget surplus recorded in the third quarter of last year. He defended government spending, saying it balances fiscal discipline with continued investment in people and infrastructure, while dismissing opposition criticism as “pessimistic”.

Waterpolo betting allegations cast shadow over Malta’s European campaign

Several Malta national team waterpolo players are under investigation over allegations they placed bets on their own match at the European Championships in Serbia, Times of Malta has revealed. Sources close to the investigation claim around four players are suspected of betting on the goal difference of Malta’s opening game against Montenegro. The Authority for Integrity in Maltese Sports has declined to confirm whether an investigation is ongoing, while the Aquatic Sports Association has said no official report has been filed. ASA president Karl Izzo warned that, if substantiated, the allegations would deal a serious blow to the sport’s reputation during a landmark tournament for Maltese waterpolo.
