While both exposed the inner workings of elite networks, their revelations, political consequences, and public reactions diverged in striking ways.

The Panama Papers: A Blueprint of Financial Secrecy
The Panama Papers, a leak of 11.5 million documents from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca, laid bare how the world’s wealthy and powerful used offshore tax havens to conceal assets. The fallout was swift and global.
Within days of the April 2016 release, Iceland’s Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson resigned amid mass protests after revelations of his undisclosed offshore holdings. In Pakistan, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was disqualified by the Supreme Court in 2017 following a probe into his family’s offshore wealth. Spain’s Industry Minister José Manuel Soria also stepped down, while political figures from Russia, China, Argentina, Ukraine, and the UK faced intense scrutiny.
The leak triggered investigations in over 80 countries, leading to more than £1 billion in recovered taxes and fines. Nearly 20% of affected nations enacted new laws or regulations to combat tax evasion and improve corporate transparency. The scandal also catalysed international cooperation, with the OECD and G20 pushing for stricter financial disclosure standards.
However, the revelations came at a cost. Journalists involved in the investigation faced threats and reprisals, most tragically exemplified by the 2017 assassination of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
The Epstein Files: A Portrait of Influence and Impunity
Fast forward to 2025, and the release of the Epstein Files by the US Department of Justice has reignited global outrage. Comprising over three million pages of documents, emails, and photographs, the files detail the extensive network of the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Unlike the Panama Papers, which exposed systemic financial misconduct, the Epstein Files focus on personal relationships, influence-peddling, and the proximity of global elites to a known predator. The documents have implicated high-profile figures across politics, royalty, business, and entertainment.
In the UK, Lord Peter Mandelson resigned from the Labour Party and the House of Lords after revelations of financial ties and leaked government memos sent to Epstein. Prince Andrew, already disgraced by previous allegations, faced renewed pressure following the release of compromising photographs and correspondence. His ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, also came under fire for accepting financial assistance from Epstein.
In Slovakia, Miroslav Lajčák, national security adviser to Prime Minister Robert Fico, resigned after messages surfaced showing friendly exchanges with Epstein. The files also revealed Epstein’s attempts to influence US policy through close ties with former Trump strategist Steve Bannon and communications with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who has faced calls to resign.
While the Epstein Files have yet to prompt the same scale of legislative reform as the Panama Papers, they have intensified public demands for transparency and accountability. The US Congress passed the Epstein Files Transparency Act, mandating the release of all related documents. In the UK, discussions are underway to reform disciplinary procedures in the House of Lords.
Two Scandals, Divergent Legacies
Both document troves have exposed the vulnerabilities of global institutions to elite manipulation. The Panama Papers highlighted the systemic abuse of financial secrecy, prompting tangible reforms and legal action. The Epstein Files, while more recent, have underscored the moral rot and impunity that can fester within elite circles.
Public trust in governance has been tested by both scandals. The Panama Papers spurred a global reckoning on tax justice, while the Epstein Files have reignited debates around sexual abuse, institutional complicity, and the need for equal justice under the law.
As the world continues to digest the revelations from the Epstein Files, one thing is clear: the appetite for accountability is growing. Whether this latest scandal will lead to lasting change—or fade into the annals of elite impunity—remains to be seen.
