A delegation from the European Parliament’s Budgetary Control Committee has raised concerns about the management and oversight of EU funds in Malta, warning that further steps are needed to strengthen accountability.
The delegation visited Malta for a series of meetings with government officials, national authorities and civil society organisations to assess how European funding is being used and monitored.
While describing the overall discussions as constructive, Zdechovský stressed that the delegation identified areas requiring improvement. He noted that although Maltese authorities presented a largely positive picture of existing systems, concerns remain about whether current safeguards are sufficient.
“We want to avoid that Malta becomes a captured state,” he said, warning against a scenario where EU funds benefit a narrow group rather than citizens and businesses.
The delegation also examined audit frameworks and control mechanisms, concluding that additional measures are necessary to ensure full compliance and transparency.
Separately, members reviewed progress at the European Union Agency for Asylum, noting improvements following earlier concerns, but emphasising the need for sustained enforcement and greater transparency in internal processes.
