hina is the biggest source of regional tension and instability due to its ongoing military activity, Taiwanese Premier Cho Jung-tai said on Tuesday, as Beijing announced it had deployed a naval carrier group into the Western Pacific for training exercises.
China, which considers democratically governed Taiwan part of its territory, has significantly increased military and political pressure on the island and continues to reject repeated calls for dialogue from President Lai Ching-te, whom it describes as a “separatist”.
Speaking to reporters in Taipei ahead of the second anniversary of Lai’s inauguration, Cho voiced concern over China’s escalating military presence across the region.
He said Chinese forces are conducting regular exercises of varying scale across the Taiwan Strait, the Indo-Pacific, the South China Sea, and areas near Japan, warning that these activities are affecting regional stability and maritime safety.
“This is the greatest source of regional unease and instability,” he said.
China’s Taiwan Affairs Office did not immediately respond to his remarks.
Meanwhile, China’s military confirmed that a carrier strike group led by the Liaoning had entered waters in the Western Pacific for drills. The navy said the exercises include live-fire training and are designed to test and improve combat readiness.
It described the deployment as part of routine annual training, aimed at strengthening operational capability and carried out in line with international law.
