ECB Unveils New Euro Banknote Designs Featuring Icons, Rivers and Birds

The European Central Bank has unveiled shortlisted designs for the first major overhaul of euro banknotes since their introduction in 2002, giving the public a choice between famous European figures and the continent’s natural landscapes.

One design theme features figures including opera singer Maria Callas, composer Ludwig van Beethoven, scientist Marie Curie, writer Miguel de Cervantes, Leonardo da Vinci and pacifist Bertha von Suttner. The reverse side would showcase European cultural spaces such as libraries, universities and public squares.

The alternative theme celebrates nature, featuring rivers and birds, including kingfishers, storks and avocets, with EU buildings appearing on the reverse side.

The ECB said the designs aim to reflect Europe’s cultural heritage and environmental diversity. The public can submit feedback until September 21, although the final decision will be taken by the ECB’s governing council later this year.

Citizens can vote on the public survey portal.

ECB President Christine Lagarde said the designs combine “beauty and meaning” and would help strengthen a shared European identity. The new notes are expected to enter circulation later in the decade.
