Abela outlines first 100 days of government, unveils startup, AI and social measures
Prime Minister Robert Abela said the government’s first 100 days have delivered steady progress based on its electoral mandate, with economic growth being linked to improved quality of life.
Speaking in St Julian’s, Abela outlined measures including free legal assistance for startup founders and a five-year exemption from Malta Business Registry fees for new companies. Cabinet has also approved an updated national AI Strategy, while the government is encouraging wider participation in its “AI for Everyone” programme.
Abela said Budget 2026 will prioritise stronger social services for older people and persons with disabilities, alongside further tax cuts for families and parents.
He highlighted Malta’s economic growth, foreign investment and post-pandemic recovery, while announcing progress on battery storage facilities to strengthen the electricity grid.
The government’s first 100 days also included IVF expansion, disability support, planning and tourism reforms, stronger Family Court procedures and increased assistance for first-time homebuyers. (The Malta Independent)
PN demands immediate resignation of Planning Authority CEO Johann Buttigieg over alleged conflicts of interest
The Nationalist Party has called for the immediate resignation of Planning Authority CEO Johann Buttigieg, citing concerns over communications and relationships with individuals who had interests before the authority.
The PN said the issue was not Buttigieg’s communication with developers or applicants, but whether the nature of those relationships and discussions created a conflict between private interests and his public responsibilities.
The party also criticised Prime Minister Robert Abela for reappointing Buttigieg in 2025, arguing that the government was already aware of the communications but that recently revealed details provide a clearer picture of the potential conflict.
The PN said regulatory independence must not only exist but be seen to exist, particularly for an authority overseeing development, environmental matters and significant commercial interests.
It urged Buttigieg to resign, or Abela to remove him, warning that continued support would leave the Prime Minister politically responsible. (Maltatoday)
