No 10 giving up hope of Brexit deal after Johnson call with Merkel hits deadlock

The Guardian reports that Boris Johnson is poised to give up on Brexit deal talks with the EU after speaking to the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, with a No 10 source briefing that an agreement looked “essentially impossible not just now but ever”.

It also reports that pound is sinking on the back of the latest developments.

Johnson is reported to have spoken to Merkel at 8am (local time) this morning. Merkel said there could only be a deal if Northern Ireland stays in Customs Union, if not, then deal is ‘overwhelmingly unlikely’. Johnson stressed to Merkel that the UK believed that they had put forward a reasonable new deal, but with no desire to engage from the EU side  and the demand on Northern Ireland staying in a Customs Union, a deal became ‘essentially impossible’.

The move is interpreted as talks in Brussels being close to breaking down, despite the fact the UK has moved a long way’. Analysts said that today’s “8am call was a ‘clarifying moment'”.
