USA’s EU ambassador to be issued with subpoena to witness in impeachment enquiry after State Dept blocked him from testifying

The chairmen of the three House committees leading Democrats’ impeachment inquiry said Tuesday they will issue a subpoena to a key official that the State Department blocked from testifying.

Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, was scheduled to appear for a deposition before the committees on Tuesday until the State Department moved early in the morning to prevent his testimony.

Chairmen Adam Schiff, Eliot Engel and Eljiah Cummings said in a statement: “Ambassador Sondland’s testimony and documents are vital, and that is precisely why the Administration is now blocking his testimony and withholding his documents.”

Sondland was scheduled to testify before three House committees in a closed-door meeting today — but earlier this morning, the State Department ordered him not to appear.

Meanwhile extreme measures are being considered to protect the identity of a whistleblower who filed a complaint about President Trump’s conduct with Ukraine, according to several sources familiar with the process.
