Corporate Dispatch Malta Newspaper Review

Good morning,

These are the headlines from Malta’s Newspapers:

Malta Today carries a story about veteran PN politician Francis Zammit Dimech who the paper says is being encouraged by party MPs and executive council members to contest the post of Secretary General against incumbent Clyde Puli.

The Times investigates the situation at the Ħal Far open centre, saying that the facility reached maximum capacity of 1,300 residents. Sources told the paper there were only 10 security guards on site and described the situation ‘a ticking time bomb’.

The Independent reports that eight ringleaders of the migrant revolt at the Ħal Far open centre on Sunday have pleaded not guilty. The court denied bail based on the gravity of the charges and the lack of ties to Malta of the accused.

Malta Today follows the arraignment in court of another 80 migrants who were involved in the Ħal Far riots. Two of them were handed six weeks in jail after pleading guilty to charges of disobeying the law and wilfully disturbing public order.

L-Orizzont says that the migrants were led into court by officials wearing surgical gloves under the watch of heavily armed police. The migrants are originally from 10 different countries and their ages range between 14 and 40.

In-Nazzjon announces that parliament voted in favour of a motion by the opposition to declare a climate emergency. The paper quotes a PN statement which said that this is an historic victory for young people and children.

The Independent quotes Prime Minister Joseph Muscat who announced in parliament that the European Union accepted Malta’s budget ‘without hesitation’. Muscat said that the government’s plans reward the most vulnerable in society.

The Times also follows the Prime Minister’s speech on Tuesday in which he accused the opposition of fanning racial tensions in its reaction to the Ħal Far riots. Joseph Muscat condemned the incident but appealed for reason.

In-Nazzjon reports on a press conference by Opposition Leader Adrian Delia on Tuesday evening, criticizing the Prime Minister for failing to provide answers to concerns that arose from the incidents at the Ħal Far open centre.

L-Orizzont covers the Prime Minister’s reaction to the budget speech on Tuesday, following the reply by the Opposition Leader. The paper praises the government for its ‘stability, unity and decisiveness’.
