Matteo Salvini’s  love affair with Nutella ends abruptly

Italian far-right leader Matteo Salvini has for years posted social media pictures of himself enjoying the Nutella spread to brandish his patriotism and show his devotion to an iconic Italian brand.

But his love affair with Nutella appears to have come to an abrupt end after the head of the anti-migration League party discovered to his dismay that many of the hazelnuts used to produce the chocolate spread were not sourced from Italy, but from Turkey.
After being asked by a supporter at a campaign event in Ravenna if he still enjoyed Nutella, Mr Salvini revealed that he had ditched the brand manufactured by the Italian confectionery group Ferrero out of a desire to support domestic farmers. “I have changed,” he replied. “Because I discovered that Nutella uses Turkish hazelnuts, and I prefer to help companies that use Italian products, I prefer to eat Italian, to help Italian farmers.”

Mr Salvini later clarified in a tweet that he would still eat Nutella but called on the manufacturer to buy its raw materials from Italy. “A request to Ferrero: buy Italian ingredients, from sugar to hazelnuts, to help our farmers!” he wrote.
