Russia have been banned from all major sporting events for four years – a period of time which includes the 2022 World Cup.
On Monday World Anti-Doping Agency confirmed the punishment in Lausanne after considering recommendations from its independent compliance review committee (CRC).
The judgement means Russia will be banned from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and the 2022 Football World Cup in Qatar.
Individual Russian athletes untainted by the scandal will able to compete independently under a neutral flag.
And despite being ruled out of the next World Cup, Russia will be clear to compete at Euro 2020 next summer, where Saint Petersburg will host three group games and a quarter-final.
BBC reports despite their ban from the tournament, Russia can take part in qualifying.
Jonathan Taylor, chair of Wada’s compliance review committee said that: “Because the qualifiers don’t decide the world champion, Russia can take part. The decision applies to the World Cup tournament because it decides the world champion.”
The sanctions also prevent Russia from hosting events during the ban.
St Petersburg is a host city for group games and a quarter-final at next summer’s European Championship (which is being hosted by several countries), as well as staging the Uefa Champions League final in 2021.
However, it will be allowed to fulfil those obligations as European football’s governing body Uefa is not defined as a “major event organisation” with regards to rulings on anti-doping breaches.
That also allows Russia, who have already qualified for Euro 2020, to play at the tournament.
